Awards Reception, Year's End Highlights

Patrick S. Osmer — April 18, 2013

Pat Osmer

Last Tuesday, I hosted the Graduate School’s annual awards reception, honoring the many graduate students who demonstrate exemplary research, scholarship, and teaching over the past year. Over 450 graduate students were invited and listed in the program. Among the students that I highlighted individually were this year’s Presidential Fellows and Graduate Associate Teaching Award winners.  I was very impressed with the energy in the room and the breadth of activities that our graduate students engage and excel in.

The scope of the graduate side of Ohio State is immense, and the opportunities are virtually unlimited. As dean of the Graduate School and vice provost of graduate studies, it’s my job to provide strategic leadership for graduate education at Ohio State and to foster quality in our graduate degree programs. This is a responsibility that I take seriously; it’s also one that I enjoy immensely because everything we do is for you, our graduate students.

In my remarks at the reception, I focused on how this is a time of unprecedented change, challenges, and opportunities for those of us working in graduate education and for people with graduate degrees. One of the ways we’re addressing this is by focusing on career development for Ohio State graduate students. We’re basing our work on the findings from last year’s national report Pathways Through Graduate School and Into Careers, which I chaired.  We’re working with Ohio State graduate programs on tracking all career outcomes for their students, and we’re actively supporting non-academic career interests.

Specific Graduate School activities include:

  • Alternative career forums for arts and humanities students
  • Versatile PhD subscription
  • Coordinating with career services offices, including Student Life and the Alumni Association
  • Developing new professional partnerships and dual degree programs
  • Connecting with corporate/industrial employers
  • Building global partnerships and dual degree programs

In many ways, graduate education has never been more important. We know that we need people with advanced degrees to provide advanced knowledge and skills across the full range of human activities and to bring creativity to identifying problems and figuring out how to solve them.

I highlighted the Presidential Fellows and Graduate Associate Teaching Award winners during the reception, but these qualities are shared by all graduate students. I want you to know that I look forward to hearing more your achievements and how you bring your talents and skills to bear in the careers that you will pursue.

Patrick S. Osmer is vice provost for graduate studies and dean of the Graduate School at Ohio State. He is also currently serving as chair of the board of directors for the Council of Graduate Schools. Osmer was chair of the Ohio State astronomy department from 1993-2006.

Hello Web Admin, I noticed that your On-Page SEO is is missing a few factors, for one you do not use all three H tags in your post, also I notice that you are not using bold or italics properly in your SEO optimization. On-Page SEO means more now than ever since the new Google update: Panda. No longer are backlinks and simply pinging or sending out a RSS feed the key to getting Google PageRank or Alexa Rankings, You now NEED On-Page SEO. So what is good On-Page SEO?First your keyword must appear in the title. Then it must appear in the URL.You have to optimize your keyword and make sure that it has a nice keyword density of 3-5% in your article with relevant LSI (Latent Semantic Indexing). Then you should spread all H1,H2,H3 tags in your article.Your Keyword should appear in your first paragraph and in the last sentence of the page. You should have relevant usage of Bold and italics of your keyword. There should be one internal link to a page on your blog and you should have one image with an alt tag that has your keyword....wait there's even more Now what if i told you there was a simple Wordpress plugin that does all the On-Page SEO, and automatically for you? That's right AUTOMATICALLY, just watch this 4minute video for more information at. <a href="">Seo Plugin</a>
