Brandie Viney, SROP Scholar

Brandie Viney

Brandie Viney was a participant in the Summer Research Opportunity Program (SROP) during the summer of 2013. Though she knew that she would be learning about graduate school and research, Brandie had no idea that the program would end up making her much stronger as an academic striver.

The program helped Brandie develop and improve her presentation skills. Her mentor, Dr. Sarah Schoppe-Sullivan, worked with Brandie continuously on her successful research project. Brandie had never presented research before, but with multiple tips and practicing she was able to present her work with control and confidence. Her mentor also wanted to give Brandie the ultimate experience and introduced her to many supportive staff members, as well as encouraged her to learn new material in the lab routinely. Brandie not only learned about new graduate options, but became excited by all of the possibilities.

Brandie gained confidence throughout SROP, personally and academically, and credits the program leaders that mentored and supported her. While Brandie did not have much of an interest in graduate school before, participating in the program helped her realize what she wants to do with her life and see that there are plenty of resources to make those events happen.
