Graduate Teaching Award Winners 2014

Patrick S. Osmer — April 10, 2014

Pat Osmer

I’m delighted to announce the 10 winners of this year’s Graduate Associate Teaching Award: Emily Arendt, History; Elizabeth Brewer, English; Heidi Brown, French and Italian; Heather Derry, Psychology; Lizabeth Goldstein, Psychology; Colleen Kennedy, English; Owen King, Philosophy, Justine Law, Geography; Jill Yavorsky, Sociology; and Philip Young, Chemistry and Biochemistry.

These are 10 extraordinary teachers, and I am inspired by their dedication to this very important role. They will be recognized by the university community on April 15 during the Graduate School’s award reception.

We have many excellent teachers among the 3000 graduate students who serve as GTAs each year. I encourage you to nominate your colleagues and yourself when the GATA nomination period opens in August.

Patrick S. Osmer is vice provost for graduate studies and dean of the Graduate School at Ohio State. He a past chair of the board of directors for the Council of Graduate Schools. Osmer was chair of the Ohio State astronomy department from 1993-2006.

Each year, at least two out of the ten recipients are from the English department. Last year, three recipients were from the English department. With over 70 graduate programs at OSU, it seems unreasonable that English would be so heavily represented and I doubt that this disproportionate representation of the department is due strictly to chance.

Further, I wonder about the diversity represented within the group. It is pretty clear that racial diversity is lacking but I hope other forms of diversity (capabilities/disabilities, age, socioeconomic backgrounds, etc) are not inherently being discriminated against during the application review process.

Perhaps a change in the application requirements or nomination process should be considered so that OSU's appreciation for diversity can be detected amongst award recipients.
