Interim Vice Provost for Graduate Studies and Dean of the Graduate School 

M. Scott Herness is the interim vice provost for graduate studies and interim dean of the Graduate School, effective Sept. 1, 2015. Herness served as associate dean of the Graduate School since 2012, and in that role, he was the primary contact for all graduate study committee chairs, liaison to the Ohio Department of Higher Education (formerly Ohio Board of Regents), and oversaw graduate fellowships, program development, curriculum, and assessment.

Herness joined Ohio State's faculty in 1997 as an associate professor in the Division of Oral Biology in the College of Dentistry. He was promoted to professor in 2003 and was appointed chair of the division in 2007.

Herness also holds a joint appointment in the Department of Neuroscience, College of Medicine.

His research focuses on sensory neuroscience with an emphasis on cellular transduction mechanisms in taste receptor cells. He has served as president of the Association for Chemoreception Sciences, and his work has been published in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences and has been featured on NPR's Talk of the Nation.

Herness's interim leadership appointment will continue until a permanent vice provost and dean is hired.
