Outcomes or Placements?

Patrick S. Osmer — January 09, 2013

It’s never too early to think about the career paths you might follow after earning your master’s or Ph.D. degree from Ohio State.

This is a topic of national and international importance in the graduate community. Last week, one of Ohio State’s own graduate faculty, Angela Brintlinger, wrote a column for the Chronicle of Higher Education on this topic.

Angela is an associate professor of Slavic & East European Languages and Cultures, and she spent the last year as a faculty fellow in the Graduate School working with me on this issue. Her column encapsulates much of what we’re doing around career development and pathways for graduate students.

Angela makes an interesting point when she writes that we should be talking about outcomes rather than placements when we talk about which careers our graduates pursue after they graduate.

I encourage you to read Angela’s contribution to this important topic and to share your thoughts on the Chronicle site or here on my blog. I am active in these discussions nationally and at Ohio State, and I am eager to hear from you.
