Regain your focus

Patrick S. Osmer — January 23, 2014

Pat Osmer

I often speak about what distinguishes graduate education. The three hallmarks that I always mention are creativity, solving problems, and making new knowledge. When you are busy with all of the activities that are part of being a graduate student though, you can lose sight of these foundational activities.

Attending research conferences can help you regain your focus.

Our annual Edward F. Hayes Graduate Research Forum is one such event, and I encourage you to mark your calendar for Friday, Feb. 21, in the Ohio Union.

Graduate students from across our entire spectrum of graduate programs present their research at the Hayes Forum, which can lead to unexpected and fruitful connections and collaborations.

The Hayes Forum is co-sponsored by the Council of Graduate Students, Office of Research, and the Graduate School.

I look forward to seeing you there.

Patrick S. Osmer is vice provost for graduate studies and dean of the Graduate School at Ohio State. He is also currently serving as chair of the board of directors for the Council of Graduate Schools. Osmer was chair of the Ohio State astronomy department from 1993-2006.
