Summer Research Opportunities Program

Patrick S. Osmer — June 11, 2015

Once again, we are hosting undergraduate researchers from around the country in our Summer Research Opportunities Program. SROP is the Graduate School’s signature program for recruiting underrepresented minority students to Ohio State. This year, 46 students are here and working with Ohio State faculty mentors on research projects. The goal of the program is to encourage these students to pursue doctoral study, ideally at Ohio State. More

The SROP program is led by Cyndi Freeman, senior director of graduate student recruitment and diversity initiatives, a national leader in this area. Cyndi also brings best practices in graduate student recruitment to graduate programs and colleges, all with an eye toward bringing the best and most diverse group of students to Ohio State.

I am proud of SROP and have brought it to President Drake’s attention as a strong example of how Ohio State is already a model for inclusiveness and diversity.

Since 2007, 325 students have completed SROP. Out of the 325 students who have completed, 116 have gone on to earn graduate degrees, with over 60 of those students receiving degrees from Ohio State.

Patrick S. Osmer is vice provost for graduate studies and dean of the Graduate School at Ohio State. He is a past chair of the board of directors for the Council of Graduate Schools. Osmer was chair of the Ohio State astronomy department from 1993-2006.
