Wednesday's quarterly meeting

Patrick S. Osmer — February 16, 2011

Pat Osmer

Thanks very much for attending Wednesday’s quarterly meeting.

I very much appreciated the opportunity to discuss some of our new thoughts and initiatives with you and to get your comments and feedback. Materials from the meeting, including those pertaining to semester conversion, are now posted.

Our meeting focused on graduate student recruitment and retention, and I am pleased that Valerie Lee,  vice provost and chief diversity officer, could attend and share her new plans for supporting the graduate community in its efforts to recruit diverse students. I think the partnership opportunities going forward will benefit us all. Similarly, I am glad that Russell Clark, executive director of English as a Second Language Programs, could attend and explain his view of how his program can provide intensive English instruction for international students so that they can reach the levels they will need in advance of beginning their normal course work.

Your comments and suggestions on identifying graduate faculty representatives for doctoral examinations were also helpful. I’ll discuss them with the Graduate School staff to see what changes we can make that will improve the whole process.

I will post my next blog post on professionally oriented master’s programs very soon. I came away from our discussion on Wednesday with the sense that there would be interest in a forum on the topic for faculty. We will look into making that happen.
